Acupuncture / Chinese Herbal Medicine and Cancer

It is sad to say, most everyone either knows someone or they themselves have had to deal with cancer. I personally have a very close family member who has been fighting cancer for over ten years now. So, I can see first hand all the issues we have to deal with. Western treatment attacks the cancer and at the same time attacks the whole person. This becomes very draining, emotionally and physically. The main side effects of chemotherapy are as follows: fatigue, nausea, and lowered immune system. Acupuncture can help offset these side effects as well as treat the spirit of the person. When treating cancer, quality of life needs to be considered, and that is where acupuncture can play a very important role. My close family member is fighting CLL, chronic lymphocytic leukemia, and has been barraged with chemo for over ten years now. About three and one half years ago he stopped responding to chemotherapy and his oncologist said he had about six months to live. He finally decided that he would be open to other modalities.

After being poked and prodded with Western needles 3 days a week for many years he opted to try Chinese herbal medicine instead of acupuncture. Up until this point he was spending most of his time between chemo treatments sleeping, to weak and worn out to enjoy any activities beyond the basics of eating and sleeping. The first summer that he was on Chinese Herbal Medicine he started to respond to Western chemotherapy again. And, at this time, he also began to see a huge change in his quality of life. He golfed more that summer than he had in the past five years. Now, three and one half years later we are not sure what the future holds, he is very sick at this time, but due to this alternative intervention he has had the opportunity to spend a little more time doing the things that bring him joy as well as be around for the birth of his first grandchild.
